Talks Target Postal Strike

Discussions are expected to take place on Wednesday to try to avoid a nationwide post strike. Two days of talks between Royal Mail bosses and the Communication Workers Union have ended without agreement. Workers are planning walkouts on Thursday and Friday in a row over pay and modernisation plans.

Cool Tube Arriving

The trains arriving on London's Metropolitan line in September 2010 will be really 'cool' with the introduction of the capital's first air-conditioned underground train. Air-conditioned trains - known as "S" Stock - will be used and by 2011, 58 air-conditioned trains will have replaced the existing rolling stock on the busy line. London's District and Circle lines will follow by 2015.

Shipyard Launches Destroyer

HMS Defender will be launched from BVT's shipyard at Govan in Glasgow later today, with thousands of people expected to attend the launch of the Royal Navy's latest Type 45 destroyer. The ship is the fifth of six commissioned to replace the existing fleet of Type 42 destroyers. With a price tag of £605m, each of the 150m-long vessels weighs about 7,350 tons and is designed to provide air defence cover.

Government Acts Against Fuel Poverty

The Government has taken action and introduced the four next steps to help low income homes deal with high energy bills, as the latest fuel poverty statistics are published. In 2007, there were around 4m fuel poor households in the UK, up from 3.5m in 2006. In England, there were around 2.8m fuel poor households up from 2.4m in 2006. They have vowed to end fuel poverty in England by 2016.

Bank Governor Meets Home Builders

Senior Scottish home building industry figures today met privately with the Bank of England Governor Mervyn King to outline current market conditions and the impact of monetary policy in Scotland. Interest rates, wholesale funding recovery and rebuilding the strength of the banking system were among the issues covered during discussion at a special roundtable session in Edinburgh.

Report Shows Government Is Failing Pensioners In Fuel Poverty
The Government is failing pensioners and poor families in fuel poverty, according to a coalition of Age Concern, Child Poverty Action Group, and National Energy Action.

MPs To Vote On Fuel Rise Delay
MPs will vote on Monday evening on plans to increase fuel duty by 3 pence a litre in January. Labour have said "it would be wrong" to bring the new rise in s soon an want it delayed until at least April. Conservative MPs concerned about the cost of petrol said they believed Chancellor George Osborne was "in listening mode" over the issue.

Countdown For Fuel Payments For Pensioners
Over 60s who haven't yet claimed the Winter Fuel Payment have just days to get in touch with The Pension Service to receive help with energy costs. Pensions Minister Mike O'Brien urged older people to get their claim forms in the post before 28 March. The Winter Fuel Payment is £200 for the over 60s rising to £300 for the over 80s.

Fuel protests threatened
Protestors have threatened to begin blockading refineries next week, if the tax on fuel is not reduced. Andrew Spence, a spokesperson for the Fuel Lobby, warned that the blockades would begin at 6am on September 14, unless price cuts were made.

British Airways announces ticket price rises
British Airways (BA) has announced an increase in fuel surcharge on ticket prices, due to increasing oil price rises. The longhaul fuel surcharge will increase to £48 per return trip, while the surcharge for shorthaul flights will rise to £16 for a return trip, for all tickets purchased from June 27.
