Miliband Denies Euro Aspirations

Senior cabinet minister David Miliband has denied newspaper reports he will jostle for a top ranking European job.

Today's Times and Guardian both suggested Mr Miliband was touted to become EU Foreign Minister, a role created under the Lisbon Treaty.

This morning Mr Miliband quashed the rumours on this Twitter page, stating: "Re gdn/times stories I'm not running for Europe High Rep job. I'm the Foreign Sec thank you very much - fully booked. [sic]"

The speculation comes as many continue to suggest former prime minister Tony Blair will be installed as the first permanent president of Europe.

However Mr Blair's possible appointment could be hindered by his association with the Bush Administration, which led the invasion of Iraq.

There is also said to be resentment of Mr Blair in countries such as Belgium and Luxembourg, as he failed to introduce Britain into the single currency.

Mr Miliband, the UK's Foreign Secretary, is reportedly seen as a more palatable figure on the international stage.

"We have a very favourable impression of Mr Miliband because he has good European credentials," one Belgian diplomat told The Times.

Should Labour lose the next general election 44-year-old Mr Miliband would return to the parliamentary back benches, or a position in the Shadow Cabinet.
