Girl Drowned In Foster Home Pool
An inquest is being heard at Portsmouth Crown Court following the death of a toddler in July 2007. The toddler drowned in a swimming pool after being left unsupervised by her foster parents. Anna Hider, who was 17-months-old, had been playing with toys on the patio of her Hampshire foster home when she went missing. The youngster was discovered in the pool by her foster mother's natural daughter. Despite attempts to revive her, she was declared dead at hospital.The inquest at Portsmouth Crown Court is expected to last five days.
Carroll Held On Suspicion Of Assault
A footballer has been arrested on suspicion of assault. Andy Carroll, Newcastle United Striker, has been arrested following a fight at a nightclub in the city. A man suffered minor head injuries during the incident at Blu Bamboo in the Bigg Market early on Monday. He was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged. Mr Carroll, 20, was questioned on suspicion of the assault occasioning actual bodily harm and released on bail pending further inquiries.
Mother Denies Murder Charges
A mother accused of murdering her daughter has denied all charges at Cardiff Crown Court. Zoe David, 34, is accused of killing Zoe-Ann David at their home in Bideford Close, Newport, in June. The four-year-old's body was found in a bedroom. A post mortem examination gave strangulation as the cause of death.Ms David's case was adjourned until 18 December. She was granted bail on the condition she resides at the Caswell Clinic in Bridgend. She had previously been remanded in custody at the clinic for her own protection. The case was adjourned until 18 December.
Royal Marines Charged With Assault
Two Royal Marines have appeared at a court martial charged in connection with an assault on an Afghan man. Both marines are alleged to have assaulted a 48-year-old man in Afghanistan in March 2009. Capt Jody Wheelhouse, from 45 Commando, based in Arbroath, Angus, and Sgt Mark Leader, of the Commando Training Centre in Devon, did not enter a plea. They have been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. The hearing took place at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth. Judge Advocate Michael Elsom adjourned the cases for a date, time and place to be fixed.
Head Teacher 'Shell-Shocked' By Inspection
An inquiry has began into the death of a head teacher. Irene Hogg,54, was found dead after a critical school inspection, one which she found "torturous". Her body was discovered at a secluded spot in the Scottish Borders in March last year. Her brother, Roger Hogg, said she had been distraught and "almost shell-shocked" by the inspection at her school, Glendinning Primary. He said she had felt "undermined" by the whole process. Miss Hogg had been head teacher at the Galashiels school for 19 years. The inquiry into her death at Jedburgh Sheriff Court was told she had died from "immersion in water and paracetamol toxicity". The inquiry into Miss Hogg's death will last two weeks.

A man is being treated for "life-threatening injuries" after a brawl at a takeaway restaurant spilled out onto the street. Police said that a 38-year-old man got "caught up" in the fight at a takeaway in Wakefield. He is understood to have been punched in the face and hit his head on the road outside the restaurant.

Former DJ Ray Teret, a friend of Jimmy Savile, has been found guilty of raping and indecently assaulting young girls. Teret, from Altrincham, was convicted of seven counts of rape and 11 counts of indecent assault throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

A UK arms dealer has been jailed for seven years for his part in a deal to ship thousands of AK47 assault rifles and millions of rounds of ammunition from China to Nigeria. 43-year-old Gary Hyde was sentenced at Southwark crown court in London after being convicted on two counts of breaching UK trade controls and concealing criminal property.
