RAF Smuggling Charges
Four RAF servicemen have been charged over smuggling cigarettes on military flights into two English RAF bases. HM Revenue & Customs said inquiries suggested huge quantities were smuggled into RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire and RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. The men, arrested earlier this year, were charged with conspiracy to evade the duty chargeable on commercial-scale quantities of cigarettes. They are due to appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court on 5 January.
BBC 'Devaluing' With DVD
The BBC have made a controversial move by releasing the third and final series of Gavin & Stacey on DVD just in time for Christmas. The series written by James Corden and Ruth Jones and, starring Joanna Page and Mathew Horne, made a welcome return to the small screen only last month, with one of the most recent episodes pulling in five million viewers to BBC1. The release is being criticised at a time when the series is currently only midway through its screening on television. Critics agree that licence-fee payers, who have funded the show, should be able to watch the entire series first and that the move is "devaluing" the licence fee.
Airport Plan Hit Turbulence
Plans to expand Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have been dealt a blow following the publication of a new report by the UK Climate Change Committee, according to WWF Scotland. The report states that Scotland's growing aviation passenger demand is not compatible with plans to reduce climate emissions. Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland, said: "Air travel is the fastest growing source of climate change emissions and has the potential to swamp all the efforts in other sectors to reduce emissions. All airport expansion plans, including those at Edinburgh and Glasgow, must be put on hold while the government develops a new climate-friendly strategy on air travel," he said.
Blacklisting Fears From UCATT
Construction union UCATT fears that new regulations designed to outlaw blacklisting contains so many loopholes they will not deter the practice. Last Wednesday the Government published its response to the consultation on blacklisting and committed itself to produce the necessary regulations. In 'Ruined Lives' UCATT's submission to the blacklisting consultation, the union argued that the regulations should not just make it illegal to blacklist for "trade union activities" but should prevent blacklisting for "activities associated with trade unions". UCATT says the Government has totally ignored this key concern.

Iain McCarron, 16, from Glasgow, could become one of the youngest criminals in Scotland to face a life sentence under an Order for Lifelong Restriction. McCarron was 15-years-old when he carried out the sex attack on the 18-year-old in North Berwick in July 2009. Lord Malcolm deferred sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh until next month for background reports.
