Woman's Car taken
A 51-year-old woman has been the victim of a carjacking in Edinburgh. She was sitting in her green Jaguar X-Type in Commiston Springs Avenue, Morningside, at 1820 GMT when a man approached the car. Rape Man Sentenced
A career criminal has been sentenced to life imprisonment for an historic rape on New Year's day in 1989. The victim had been working on New Year's Eve at a restaurant in Soho Street, W1. She was approached from behind and a stranger put his right hand over her mouth as he lifted and dragged her into a basement area. That man was Anthony Foster and while police enquiries were unable to identify who was responsible at the time, a review of the case in 2008 provided new forensic opportunities and identified Foster as the suspect. Foster was arrested on 22 October 2009, and ended up admitting the rape and robbery during police questioning. He was charged with rape, robbery and false imprisonment and pleaded guilty on 4 November to all counts.
Liverpool Uni Blast

The man and woman, believed to be aged about 25, were taken to hospital after the blast at midday on Wednesday. The building, on Crown Street, was evacuated and has been temporarily closed. Police confirmed the Health and Safety Executive had been informed and that an investigation is under way. Ambulance and firefighters were called to the scene and the area was made safe.
Kitten Dies
A kitten was suffocated in an empty washing machine after a drunken student placed it inside and closed the door, a court has heard. Daniel Harris, 20, who is studying at Aberystwyth University, had been playing with Esmeralda, but he forgot about her and later found her dead. He admitted a charge of criminal damage and was given a 12-month conditional discharge by the town's magistrates. The court heard how Harris handed himself in to police and felt remorse.
