Other News In Brief
Use Emergency Services
The NHS has appealed to the public to make appropriate use of accident and emergency services over the winter, when these are under extreme pressure. Currently emergency departments are dealing with many minor ailments, which could be dealt with by GPs or pharmacists. More than 50,000 people are seen in the Dumfries Infirmary and in the Galloway Community Hospital emergency departments every year - about a third of the population. Health Director Jeff Ace said that although staff do a "great job" in dealing with these problems, it would help them that patients sought treatment elsewhere. If the department is full of non-emergency activity, genuine emergency cases lose quality in the treatment because so much work can overflow the staff ability.
Pioneer Animal Surgery
A reindeer at Edinburgh Zoo called Eskimo has undergone pioneering keyhole surgery to remove one of his testicles, which was affecting his testosterone flow and may have developed into a tumour. Eskimo had been displaying submissive behaviour and was being bullied by the other male reindeer as well as showing some unusual and delayed development. By removing the testicle, it is expected any abnormal hormone production will stop. Abdominal surgery on animals, which is behind human medical advances, has a number of negative factors, like more post-operative pain, slower recovery and a higher risk of complications and infections. Although the operation has been a success, it has been much more difficult than in a human, or indeed in a dog, where there is more space to work despite their smaller size.
Negative Effects Of Fish Quotas Cuts
Cornwall fishermen are waiting to hear what their quotas will be for the next months while they fear further cuts have a devastating effect to their livelihoods. The European Parliament will decide how many of each fish species fishermen are allowed to catch and although the rules are designed to protect fish stocks, in many cases have led to dead fish being thrown back into the sea. Meanwhile UK European ministers want to maintain last year's quota for sole, the commission wants it cut although it would have a devastating effect on the whole fleet. UK politicians are expected to call for measures to eliminate discards and are proposing more flexibility on quotas despite it suppose boats have to be much more closely monitored, perhaps via CCTV.
Man Critical After Fire
A man is life threatening in hospital and three other people have been treated for smoke inhalation following a house fire in Rhyl, DenbighshireNorth Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews were called at about 20 minutes after midnight. The man, believed to be 21, was taken immediately to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan where he is described as being in a critical condition. According to the fire services, it seems the blaze started in the kitchen and its cause was cooking left unattended.
Extra Staff To Combat Rail Strike
Railway signal workers started six days of strike action today in a row over rosters at a new control centre about the imposition of five shorter shifts in place of the three longer ones they currently work. The union said the strike - which will end at midnight on Saturday - will hit services but Network Rail denied it and drafted extra staff to achieve train services would run as normal. Peak-time services in south Wales ran unaffected this morning, with 95% of trains arriving on time. The union claimed that managers standing in for the strikers had received only five hours of briefing for duties that require a minimum of a month’s full training. Workers taking action are based in areas including Cardiff, Newport, Port Talbot, the Vale of Glamorgan and Rhymney Valley.
