Passengers Stranded As Airline Folds
Thousands of UK travellers have been left stranded across Europe after a Scottish airline went bust last night.
Globespan, which owned Scottish subsidiary Flyglobespan, entered administration yesterday with flight cancellations taking immediate effect.
Hundreds of staff have lost their jobs, with many more passengers stuck in airports across the continent, including Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Egypt.
Last year the airline carried more than 1.5m passengers, on 12,000 flights.
Thomson and First Choice confirmed this morning they will offer alternative holidays to thousands of Globespan customers who made bookings directly from any Thomson or First Choice shop.
Dermot Blastland, Managing Director of Thomson and First Choice said: "We are advising customers who booked a package holiday through one of our shops to take their original documents with them to any of our branches nationwide.
"Our experienced retail teams will be able to arrange an alternative holiday from our wide range of destinations, and assist with claiming the refund for their Globespan holiday. Customers can therefore rebook to go to their original destination or an alternative, simply by paying the difference in the package price if the cost is higher.
The Scottish government said is it extremely disappointed by the Flyglobespan news.
An official said MSPs are contacting the company as a matter of urgency to seek clarification on the situation.
"We recognise that this will be an anxious time for employees and their families, particularly at this time of year," said the spokesman.
"The Scottish government stands ready to offer support through the work of the Partnership Action for Continuing Employment initiative, should that be required."

Record High For Scotland's Renewable Energy

14-Year-Old Rescued From Chimney
A 14-year-old boy has been rescued from a chimney by firefighters who had to dismantle to the 20ft stack brick by brick. The boy was wedged inside the chimney of a single-storey building in Cassels Street, Carluke, South Lanarkshire, but it is not yet known how the boy fell down the chimney.

Employers Get Support For Graduate Jobs
A new pilot scheme in Scotalnd to support graduate recruitment and business growth has been launched by the Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees in Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and Dumfries and Galloway can now receive up to £3,000 to take on a graduate in a permanent post.
