Islamic 'Coffin Protest' Opposed
The Home Secretary has said he will back any request from police or local government to ban an Islamic group marching through Wootton Bassett. Alan Johnson said he felt "revulsion" at the thought of Islam4UK's proposed march through Wootton Bassett which has become famous for its repatriation ceremonies for fallen British service personnel. Islam4UK says it wants to parade empty coffins through the town to draw attention to Afghan war casualties. Mr Johnson said: "The idea that anyone would stage this kind of demonstration in Wootton Bassett fills me with revulsion. I find it particularly offensive that the town, which has acted in such a moving and dignified way in paying tribute to our troops who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, should be targeted in this manner."
Edinburgh Tattoo Goes Royal
The famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been officially renamed as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Scotland's military showpiece promotes servicemen and women through music, dance and military displays as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. Founded in 1950, it has raised £5m for arts and culture organisations and military service benevolent funds. More than 12 million people have joined the audience since it started with more than 200,000 attending each year's run.
Olympic Park Link Completed
A new link into the Olympic Park underneath the busy A12 dual carriageway has been finished on schedule. The underpass was constructed beneath the busy six-lane dual carriageway, while it remained fully operational to daily traffic. Fifty workers were involved in the installation of the underpass, which was completed in just 28 days. Olympic Delivery Authority Chairman John Armitt said: "The delivery of this critical engineering project on time is a significant achievement given the complexities and challenges involved. It is a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of our workers and engineers working round the clock to construct the new underpass beneath a busy dual carriageway, without causing any disruption to motorists."
TV Duo Up For Gong
Ant and Dec have been nominated for TV presenters of the year at the National TV Awards - a prize they have won eight times in a row. Two of Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donelly's shows, I'm a Celebrity and Saturday Night Takeaway, are up in the entertainment programme category. Paul O'Grady, stand-up comic Michael McIntyre and Holly Willoughby have been nominated alongside Ant and Dec on the presenter shortlist. Dermot O'Leary will host this year's ceremony, to be held on 20 January. The awards, which are decided by public phone vote, will be broadcast live on ITV1 from the O2 Arena in east London. Doctor Who star David Tennant is one of three Davids nominated for the drama performance prize, with A Touch Of Frost star Sir David Jason and Shameless actor David Threlfall also in the running. Strictly Come Dancing, named best talent show at the last awards, is shortlisted in the same category, again alongside The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Dancing On Ice. Last year, the event saw Ant and Dec named best entertainment presenters for the eighth year in a row
PM Visits Gateway's Port Construction Site
The Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson visited London Gateway's port construction site to mark the start of work on one of the UK's largest infrastructure projects. DP World is behind the £1.5 billion development, which will be Europe's largest combined deep-sea port and logistics park. Situated on the north bank of the River Thames near Thurrock in Essex, the 1,500-acre site is the same size as two Cities of London. It will give unrivalled deep-sea shipping access and transform the movement of freight around the UK, reducing road haulage and cutting CO2 emissions.
Road Scheme Approved
A £35m road scheme to improve safety and journey times between two villages in south Powys has been given the go-ahead. Work on the section of the A470 between Cwmbach and Newbridge-on-Wye, near Llandrindod Wells, is expected to start early in 2010. The news was announced by Economy and Transport Minister Ieaun Wyn Jones.

Racism in the British workplace is “damaging” the career prospects of many black workers, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has claimed. The TUC said that black workers get less training opportunities, although they are often better qualified than their white counterparts.

The Government has today published a number of amendments to strengthen the Postal Services Bill. The changes incorporate feedback from MPs, Lords, Royal Mail, other postal operators and the Communication Workers Union, as well as other interested parties.

Street cleaners urged to fight crime
Street cleaners and other street workers have been urged to help fight crime by becoming the eyes and ears of a community. A report by the Audit Commission said that street workers employed by councils to observe low-level criminal activity in a community would not place an extra burden on them or the police.
