Fire Destroys Building Site

More than 150 residents fled from their homes after a huge fire broke out at a construction site in London. About 75 firefighters and 15 fire engines battled to stop the blaze in Camberwell Station Road, and to prevent it from spreading to the Crawford Estate, at around 2.30am yesterday morning. The fire, which destroyed the five-storey building under construction, was put out within four hours of the emergency services being called. Most of the homes were not damaged and residents spent the night at the Territorial Army centre in Flodden Road. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Missing Woman In River

A body discovered in the River Lea on Tuesday morning is believed to be a 20-year-old woman who was reported missing last month. Metropolitan Police said it was confident the body was Musonda Chimfwenbe from Bow, east London. She was last seen on 10 December and her handbag was seen on a towpath beneath the bridge where the DLR crosses the river on 13 December. Yesterday, her death was being treated as "unexplained".

UDA Disarms

One of Northern Ireland's bloodiest terror groups has put its arms beyond use, its leadership confirmed yesterday. The loyalist Ulster Defence Association (UDA) released a full statement on its programme of decommissioning on Wednesday after weeks of behind the scenes negotiations between 'brigades' and representatives of the Independent Monitoring Commission. UDA members were given the deadline of 9 February to dispose of all their weapons, or face sanctions. NIO Secretary of State Shaun Woodward said after this date any guns recovered by police would be used as forensic evidence in criminal trials.

During its 1969 to 2001 terror campaign, the UDA is alleged to have murdered 400 people and maimed many more. The group also used the Ulster Freedom Fighters (UFF) cover name.

British Built Car Tops Poll

Autocar readers have overwhelmingly voted for the British-built Range Rover as their Car of the Decade, in a poll run on autocar.co.uk during the past month. The poll received 7,500 votes with the Range Rover taking 18%, nearly a fifth of the votes. The British-built Range Rover was launched in 2001 to widespread acclaim. In the Autocar poll it beat off stiff competition from the MkII Lotus Elise, also built in the UK, which took second place with 12.5% of the vote, and the Bugatti Veyron and Nissan GT-R, which each polled 8.8% of the total to finish joint third.

Beach Pensioner Body

A post mortem is to be carried out after the body of an elderly woman has been found on an East Lothian beach. A member of the public found the body at about 9am on Tuesday on Musselburgh beach. Lothian and Borders Police said it was trying to find out the identity of the woman and an area of the beach had been cordoned off for an investigation. Early indications suggested the death was not suspicious and hypothermia may have played a part.

Commonwealth Games Venues Underway

Construction work has begun on the National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, a facility that will host two events - badminton and cycling - at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The NISA and velodrome - which will be one of the biggest indoor sports facilities of its type in Europe - will be located on a 10.5 hectare site in the East End of Glasgow, close to Celtic Park and the Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village. The complex will be the principal new dedicated sports facility for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and will include Scotland's first indoor velodrome, building on the celebrated successes of Sir Chris Hoy and other Scottish cyclists. Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd will deliver the building of the facility. The indoor arena, which will host the Badminton events during the Games, will have 5,000 spectator seats when set up for sporting competitions, while the velodrome will have a permanent capacity for 2,000 seated and 500 standing spectators viewing the 250-metre cycle track, which will be increased to 4000 seats at Games time for the track cycling events.
