Snow Halts Soaps

Filming was suspended on Coronation Street yesterday as a result of heavy snow.

The weather prevented essential crew and cast members from reaching the studios in central Manchester, and the conditions meant it was not possible to film outside.

A spokeswoman said it was "very rare" for shooting to be suspended on the show, set in the fictional location of Weatherfield.

"It has to be very extreme for us to stop," she added.

Shooting also largely ground to a halt on Leeds-based soap Emmerdale.

The ITV1 show's spokeswoman said: "We have three directors working at a time, and two can't work today because they were filming outside. Ninety-five per cent of cast members didn't make it in."

She said the break in filming was unlikely to have a serious effect on the programme.

"Because it's the beginning of the year, filming can be jigged around," she added. Another soap which is filmed in the region, Channel 4's Hollyoaks, was also affected by the conditions.

Only one of the five shoots planned for Tuesday was able to go ahead at the Lime Pictures studio in Childwall, Liverpool.

The last time that Corrie filming was halted was last February when the set shut down for the day so that staff could attend a memorial service for Sara Roache, 58, wife of the longest serving cast member in Coronation Street, Bill Roache.

A decade before, filming was cancelled in 1999 when Corrie stalwart Bryan Mosley, who played shopkeeper Alf Roberts, died.
