Pilots Made Fatal Error

The pilots of two light aircraft which collided over south Wales did not see each other "until it was too late" an inquiry has found. Hylton Price and Andrew Marsh and two Air Training Corps cadets died in the mid-air collision near Bridgend. Cousins Nikkita Marie Walters, 13, and Katie-Jo Davies, 14, were on RAF "air experience" flights when their two light aircraft collided. A Ministry of Defence report makes 29 recommendations following the accident. The aircraft came down on land close to the Kenfig nature reserve in February last year.

House Prices To Beat Inflation

Inflation-beating house price growth will continue to be a feature of the coming decade, though at a lower rate than seen over the past ten years, according to new analysis from Savills Research. The property consultancy forecasts that demand will be sustained by stock shortages, but price growth will be constrained by more limited access to mortgage finance. It forecasts 40% inflation-adjusted growth in the mainstream market over the next ten years, much more in line with the long term average.

Fisherman Killed

An angler has died after the cliff face he was standing on collapsed due to icy conditions in Northumberland. The man, who has not yet been named, was fishing from the cliff top at Sandy Bay, near Newbiggin, on Wednesday. He fell about 50ft (15.2 metres) to the shore below and was buried under rocks and rubble. He was pronounced dead by coastguard and paramedics, but bad weather prevented emergency services recovering the man's body until conditions eased.

Deadly Roadside Wait

A 42-year-old man has been killed in a crash while waiting in his car for a recovery vehicle to come to his aid. The accident happened on the A1 south of Cockburnspath in the Scottish Borders at about 7.45pm on Wednesday. The victim struck a sign post with his BMW and was waiting for a recovery truck when a lorry was in collision with his car and was pronounced dead at the scene while the lorry driver was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Scrappage Scheme

Despite the success of the UK car scrappage scheme and a temporary VAT cut, 2009 was the motor industry's worst in over a decade. The innovative scheme could not prevent last year being the worst year for car sales in 14 years – despite another surge in demand for new vehicles last month. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported that 150,936 new cars were registered in December, 38.9% more than a year ago. Just over 20% of the sales were to consumers who received a £2,000 subsidy by trading in their old vehicle.
