Two women are being held in police custody following the death of a 49-year-old man at a flat in the east end of Glasgow. The body of the man, whose identity has not been released, was found in a flat in Cockenzie Street, Greenfield, at about 7.45pm on Sunday. A report has been prepared for the procurator fiscal and the two women, aged 45 and 58, are expected to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the death.

Tragic Angler Named

Police have named an angler who was killed when a cliff in Northumberland collapsed because of the icy weather. Jeff Nixon, 49, was casting from the coast near Newbiggin-by-the-Sea when a section of cliff gave way on 6 January. Mr Nixon, from Ashington, fell about 50ft (15.2m) to the shore below and was buried under rocks and rubble. Coastguard and fire crews made a three-hour bid to find him and bad weather prevented emergency services recovering his body for almost 24 hours. Extreme snowfalls, ice and high winds are thought to have made the cliff top unstable.

Credit Cards Paying Off Mortgages

Over 128,000 householders in Scotland are using credit cards to pay for their mortgage or rent in an effort to stave off potential repossession or eviction, a new survey by Shelter reveals. An exclusive You Gov poll for the charity's ROOF magazine reveals a disturbing picture of tens of thousands of people in Scotland taking desperate measures with credit cards to keep a roof over their heads.

The survey asked if respondents had paid their rent or mortgage by credit card in the past 12 months. In Scotland, 8% of respondents who were liable for the rent or mortgage said yes – suggesting a Scottish figure of around 128,500.

Councils Deliver Affordable Homes

The appetite for council house building is stronger than ever, according to the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), which confirmed that 73 local councils in England will have access to over £230m of funding under Round II of its Local Authority New Build Programme. The funding, made up of £122.6m grant from the HCA and matched by a similar figure of borrowing by the local authorities, will see over 1,900 new council homes built, many of which will be larger family-sized homes. Priority was given to schemes offering high energy efficiency standards and over 90% funded today will meet Level 4, or higher, of the Code for Sustainable Homes. As a result at least 7,900 people on council waiting lists will have a quality new home at a rent they can afford, with lower energy bills and a reduced impact on the environment.

Welsh Seat Success

An engineering company in Powys is poised to sign a lucrative £150m order to manufacture seats for two of Russia's largest aircraft makers. It is thought the deals could create dozens of new jobs at Cobra UK's factory in Welshpool. The car parts firm started branching out into alternative markets when the recession hit the automotive industry. It has since developed a seat which it claims is 5.2kg lighter than its competitors and could cut fuel costs. By using its seats, Cobra UK claimed the fuel bill for a 220-seat aircraft could fall by £530,000 a year, and there would be a reduction in maintenance costs. The firm said it had signed letters of agreement with two of Russia's largest aircraft makers after they spotted the new seats at an air show near Moscow.

Tesco's Happy Christmas

Tesco, has said it enjoyed its best Christmas performance for three years, after seeing a "strong" rise in sales. UK like-for-like sales - which do not include new store openings - excluding petrol and VAT, had risen by 4.9% in the six weeks to 9 January. However, Tesco offered double points on its Clubcard loyalty scheme, which contributed 0.7% to the sales growth. More details: Tesco Reports Strong Festive Sales

Scots House Value Rising At 'Gradual Pace'

A rise in house prices last month in Scotland has been reported by 25% of chartered surveyors, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Scotland. Scotland was the the only part of the UK where house prices did not fall and 75% of chartered surveyors said prices had remained stable. Sarah Speirs, from RICS Scotland, said: "Chartered surveyors believe things are picking up in Scotland on the housing front albeit at a very gradual pace. Even the traditionally quiet period in December did not deter potential buyers or sellers. Figures from the report indicate that prices and the number of sales could continue to creep upwards into spring." Just 6% of surveyors reported a fall in house prices in November.
