School Cheats Brought To Book
The mobile phone is being blamed for widespread examination cheating. More than 4,400 people were caught cheating in last year's GCSEs and A-levels in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the exams watchdog Ofqual figures show. They said a 6% rise in cheating by candidates was apparent, although they said that cheating is still very rare, affecting 0.03% of exams taken. The main way pupils cheat is by using mobile phones or other technology. As a result, schools are being sold detection equipment to trace devices being used secretly in exam rooms. But pupils are also being targeted by websites openly selling "exam cheat equipment", including concealed ear-pieces to receive information.
Bomb Blasts PSNI Base
A PSNI spokeswoman in Northern Ireland has said that officers are investigating a blast at the rear of Oldpark police station in the early hours of this morning. The explosion caused damage to fencing at the perimeter wall. There were no reports of any injuries. Army bomb experts have been tasked and about 40 families have been moved from their homes following the small explosion.
Teen Held Over Incident Exposure
Following three further incidents of indecent exposure in Larbert and Falkirk Monday and yesterday, a 17-year-old local male has been detained. This follows appeals in relation to two incidents which took place last week on 26 Tuesday and 29 Friday in Larbert. He is expected to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court today.
Work Starts On Sandwell Rehab Clinic
Kier Moss started the building work on Sandwell's new £2.9 million High Dependency Rehabilitation Unit at Heath Lane Hospital for client Sandwell Mental Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust. Designed by Kier Moss' architect, Archial, the 12-bed facility will provide care for people with serious, long-term mental health problems. Patients at the unit will receive a range of services such as psychiatry, psychology and speech & language therapy, as well as occupational therapy and physiotherapy. The unit, which will be operational by December 2010, amounts to £3.7m of investment for Sandwell and the wider Black Country area.
Three Charged Over £85k Fraud
Cumbria police have charged three people from Sedbergh following an indepth investigation into fraud and money laundering. Matthew Dawkins, 21, a nurse from Main Street, Sedbergh, has been charged with thirty three counts of fraud by false representation and a proceeds of crime offence. Zarina Gray, 20, who works in retail and lives in Main Street, Sedbergh, has been charged with 13 counts of fraud by false representation and a proceeds of crime offence. Dalvan Steven Dawkins, 54, a Lancashire police officer and also from the Sedbergh area has been charged with 1 x fraud by false representation and 6 x proceeds of crime / money laundering. The charges follow an investigation that was launched in July 2009 after the Royal Bank of Scotland was defrauded of around £85,000 worth of fraudulent credit card payments. All three have been placed on police bail to appear at South Lakes Magistrates Court on Tuesday 16 Feb.

Campaign to crack down on benefit cheats launched
The government has launched a campaign which aims to crack down on benefit cheats. The 'No Ifs, No Buts' campaign stresses the message that there are no excuses for committing benefit fraud. It is estimated that almost £1 billion was lost last year through benefit fraud, compared to £2 billion in 2001.

Benefit fraud crackdown saves taxpayers £400m
A government crackdown against fraud and error has saved £400 million of taxpayers money, according official statistics released today. The figures showed that overpayments in 2002/03 were £400 million less than they would have been if fraud and error had stayed at the same level as the baseline year of 1997/98.

Christmas campaign to target benefit cheats
A new government campaign is set to warn benefits cheats who are engaged in cash-in-hand work that they can expect to feel the full weight of the law if they are caught. The Targeting Benefit Fraud campaign is being stepped up as Christmas gets closer and some people become tempted to work illegally whilst claiming benefits.

23 Charged With Drug Offences Following Raids
More than 20 people have been charged with drug offences following a number of raids carried out in London, Gravesend, Dover and Deal. A total of 23 people were arrested during twenty raids carried out over three days. The suspects, ranging in age from 17 to 52, have all been charged in connection with the supply of class A drugs.
