Six Year Sentence For Stabbing
A man has been jailed after he stabbed a Gorton man, narrowly missing his heart.
Paul Johnstone, 28, of no fixed abode pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square.
He was sentenced to six years in jail earlier this week.
At about 10.50pm on Tuesday 11 August 2009, Johnstone, who was with two friends, stopped the victim, a 23-year-old man, on Wadeson Road. Johnstone asked him for a light.
The four men spoke for a short while. When two of the victim's friends appeared, Johnstone and his friends conferred among themselves.
Johnstone suddenly pulled out the knife and stabbed the man, once, in the chest, the court heard.
The victim struggled to a nearby house on Wadeson Road, where he fell to a floor before paramedics came to treat him.
He suffered a punctured right lung. The wound narrowly missed his heart.
Johnstone was found inside a nearby address on Downing Street. The offending knife had been left in the toilets.
Detective Constable Claire Flusk said: "This was a callous act and in the end the victim was lucky that we was not killed.
"I hope today's sentence sends out a clear message to would-be offenders about the danger of carrying knives, and how seriously the courts view such attacks."
