Ship Blaze tackled
Up to 50 firefighters have tackled a fire on a so-called "ghost ship" being dismantled at a yard on Teesside. Crews battled flames on the former French aircraft carrier Clemenceau in Hartlepool for more than two hours today. Some 70 people had been working on the ship when the fire broke out. There are no reported injuries and the fire was not thought to be toxic. A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesman said the fire, which was contained within three compartments, started in cabling.
New Police Chief For Merseyside
Merseyside Police's new Chief Constable, Jon Murphy, has completed his first day at the helm of the Liverpool force. Mr began his career in the Force in 1975 and worked his way up through the ranks over the past three decades gaining experience as Head of Operations at the National Crime Squad and most recently the Association of Chief Police Officers' National Coordinator of Serious and Organised Crime. "Very few officers have the honour of becoming Chief Constable in the Force area in which they were born, began their career and worked up through the ranks. I am looking forward to the challenge of leading Merseyside Police," he said.
Drivers Still Using Phones
The latest official figures for mobile phone use from the Department for Transport show that drivers are still taking risks with their own lives and those of others, says the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists). Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research, said: "It is clear that, despite wide publicity on the risks, people are still choosing to ignore advice and use their phones in their cars. "Along with consistent and high profile policing drivers need to be educated about how and why driving on the phone is so dangerous."
Future Film To Raise £5m
The film finance and production group, Future Film is to be floated on the stock market later this month. It is also to get a new chairman, Sir Colin Chandler who chaired easyJet for more than seven years, before it joins AIM - the London Stock Exchange's international market for smaller growing companies. Future Film organises financing for film and TV productions and has offices in London and California. It has raised more than £2bn for over 120 films in the past nine years and there are plans to expand in Australia, South Africa and Spain.
Brothel Pair Jailed
A couple have been jailed for running a "lucrative" prostitute ring in Northern Ireland and in Ireland from Pembrokeshire, Wales. Young women arriving from south America and Africa believed they would be given work as hairdressers. Thomas Carroll, 48, was jailed for seven years and his wife Shamiela Clark, 32, to three-and-half-years at Cardiff Crown Court. They admitted prostitution and money laundering offences. Carroll's daughter Toma, 26, got two years for laundering and running the business from an old vicarage in the village of Castlemartin.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.
