Appeal After Halifax Assault

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted in Halifax. The 28-year-old was walking along Wards End, Halifax between 7.45pm and 8pm on Friday 5 February when she was surrounded and then punched by another female. The woman then ran along Wards End and was chased by the other female and three other women until she escaped into the Old Cock pub. The attacker is described as 17, short and of a medium to round build. She is white, with black hair tied back and was wearing a brown leather jacket with a dark coloured hoody underneath and blue jeans. She was also wearing a lot of make up including black mascara. She was carrying a blue plastic bag.

Witness To Jewellery Heist Sought

Rush hour commuters could help find the gang behind a Coventry city centre robbery. People heading for home last Friday may have seen the three armed men minutes before they struck at a jewellery shop in The Burges. The three men, all wearing dark hooded clothes, targeted the Sapphire Jewellers at around 5.30pm. Detectives believe people heading away from work for the weekend may have seen the gang prior to the incident nearby. The men, who were carrying weapons - one a baton and one a knife - escaped with a quantity of gold jewellery.

Newcastle Drug Dealer Jailed

A convicted Newcastle drug dealer has been ordered to pay back thousands of pounds of his ill-gotten gains following a Northumbria Police investigation. Neil John Barratt, 43, formerly of Throckley, will have to pay more than £25,000 within six months. Barratt was jailed for 18 years in June 2009 for conspiracy to supply class A drugs, GBH, blackmail and possession of a prohibited weapon. On Friday, February 5, 2010, a confiscation hearing was held at Newcastle Crown Court to assess how much money Barratt had made from crime. It was agreed that Barratt should pay back £25,200. If he fails to pay this sum within the allotted time an extra year will be added to his sentence. He will still have to pay the debt.

Minister Opens Welsh School

Wales' Education Minister Leighton Andrews today officially opened the new Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful, Welsh medium primary school, in Merthyr Tydfil. The Welsh Assembly provided £6.3m to build the school which will provide modern 21st Century facilities for 380 pupils, aged between three and 11. The school has been built with top green credentials including geothermal heating, solar panels, automatic ventilation and rainwater recycling facilities. Mr Andrews said: "It’s vitally important that we need to make sure that the funding which we make available for education in Wales reaches the front lines. I have recently announced a major review of the cost of administering the education system in Wales. I have appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers as the independent body to carry out this important review."

Funding Boost Of £455m For Equal Pay Claims
Funding of £455m will be awarded to councils in England to allow back payments relating to thousands of equal pay claims from women workers. In a move to speed up long-term commitments to achieving equal pay for all council workers, local government minister John Healey gave the go-ahead to 34 councils to raise the money through capitlisation.

Public schools found guilty of fee fixing
Fifty of England’s top public schools have broken competition law by exchanging information about fees, the Office of Fair Trading has announced. Following an investigation lasting more than two years, the OFT found that pupils’ parents ended up paying higher fees as a result of the information-sharing.

New Data Shows Women Hit By 'Mid-Life Pay Crisis'
Female managers over 40 years old are earning 35% less than men, according to new data by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and XpertHR. To earn the same as a male manager over a career, a woman would have to work the equivalent of over 14 years more.

Commission On Minimum Wage Visit
Two Low Pay Commissioners are to visit London next week on a fact-finding visit about the National Minimum Wage. The visit is one of a number of planned trips the Low Pay Commission is making around the UK during 2011 to "gather information on how the minimum wage is operating".

Report highlights gender pay gap in the UK
Women are still being paid less than men, thirty years after the introduction of equal pay legislation, a new report has found. The government-commissioned "Shaping a Fairer Future" report from the Women and Work Commission found that women are earning 17% less than men. This was "bad for women and bad for Britain", the report said.
