Welsh Assembly Backs Law Referendum

The Welsh Assembly has backed a call from the First and Deputy First Minister for a referendum on greater devolved law making powers.

First Minister Carwyn Jones will now formally write to the Welsh Secretary of State requesting a referendum to provide additional legislating responsibilities to the Government.

Mr Jones described the backing as "an important day for the future governance of Wales".

"I am grateful for the cross party support we have received today, which will enable us to take the next step in bringing decision-making closer to the people," he said.

"I believe this Assembly has shown - and this government has shown - that we can handle legislation responsibly.

"We have shown that we can deliver quality Welsh laws that can make a real difference to people’s lives in Wales. Today’s vote seeks to build on the real and tangible benefits that devolution has delivered for the people of Wales over the last decade."

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said the Welsh people now believe the Assembly rather than any other legislature should make most of the decisions that affect their daily lives.

"And I am confident that if you ask people should the Assembly have more tools to do the job more effectively, then most people in Wales would say ‘yes’."

He cited the abilities of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Scottish Parliament to make laws without having to seek the consent from Westminster.

"Then why should it be any different for us in Wales?" asked Mr Wyn Jones.

"We are proud that we have brought legislation closer to the people of Wales. But we know we can do more with the proper tools. We want to make laws in Wales, for Wales."
