Falklands 'War Of Words' Looms
Argentina has announced new controls on shipping through its waters to the Falkland Islands in a growing dispute over British oil drilling plans. A permit will be needed by ships using Argentine waters en route to the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands - all UK controlled. The UK Foreign Office said the Falkland Islands' waters were controlled by its authorities and would not be affected. Argentina has protested to the UK about oil exploration due to begin this year. Buenos Aires claims sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, which it calls Islas Malvinas, with an occupation in March 1982 leading to a bloody war with UK forces to oust the invaders in the South Atlantic islands.
Worker Dies In Scotland
A Lithuanian workman has been killed in an industrial accident at a factory in the south of Scotland. It is understood the 36-year-old was operating a digger when he was fatally injured at the Alba Proteins plant near Dumfries at about 3.40pm on Tuesday. Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had been informed about the incident. Alba Proteins is part of the Leo Group which specialises in the processing of animal by-products. Police said their investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Merseyside Police Use Thermal Scanner
Thermal imaging technology has been used for the first time on the Force's 'drone' or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to make an arrest in Merseyside. Two men suspected of stealing a Renault Clio in Bootle were tracked by the UAV, which is a remote-controlled aerial camera operated by a police officer on the ground, and after fleeing the vehicle, one man was immediately arrested while another hid in thick undergrowth. But thanks to the UAV's onboard thermal imaging technology, its operator was able to use live images of the body-heat the suspect was giving out and direct patrols on the ground and in the dark to where he was. The second alleged offender was arrested shortly after he abandoned the Clio.
Appeal After Fatal Fife Car Crash
Police in Fife have appealed for witnesses following a fatal road crash last week. Emergency services were called to the A91 near Gateside about 11.30am on 11 February, following reports of a two car accident and following their attendance an 84-year-old man was found to be dead at the scene. Road Policing Inspector Lindsey Brown said: "We are in the early stages of our investigation into this crash and would appeal for any person who may have seen a red Suzuki Alto heading east towards Gateside on the A91 about 11.30am this morning to contact us. We are particularly keen to speak to a Midwife who assisted at the scene."
Funding To Allow Adapted Elderly Living
A £4.9m Wales-wide package to provide practical help for older and disabled people to remain in their own homes, has been announced. The funding has been awarded to Care and Repair Cymru and to the individual Care and Repair agencies across Wales. The service helps older people and people with disabilities to repair, improve and adapt their homes to enable them to continue living in them. Welsh Deputy Housing Minister Jocelyn Davies said: "Simple adaptations to a person's home, such as adding grab rails or improved steps, can have a huge impact on their quality of life. "Allowing older people to remain in their own homes in comfort and security, through a varied programme of repairs and adaptations, not only enhances the health and emotional well-being of individuals but also in improving their homes, makes communities more cohesive and sustainable."
