Murdered Sappers Remembered
Members of the Royal British Legion, flanked by standard bearers, have laid poppy wreaths at the gates of a NI army base where two soldiers lost their lives exactly a year ago. The solemn memorial service was held yesterday to mark the first anniversary of the deaths of two soldiers shot dead by dissident republicans. Sappers Mark Quinsey, 23, and Patrick Azimkar, 21, were murdered by two Real IRA gunmen outside Massereene Barracks in Antrim as they collected pizzas at the gates. The 38 Engineer Regiment squaddies were just hours away from deployment to Afghanistan and were already dressed in desert fatigues when they were killed.

A post mortem examination is to be carried on a baby's body found at an Islamic Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. It was found by members of the Makki Masjid mosque in Shelton. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the initial assessment of the scene by Staffordshire Police on Saturday. Mosque members claimed police did not look inside the bag in which the baby was found for 45 minutes after arriving at the scene.
Death Driver Jailed
A driver, Darren Jackson, who was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow last month, has been sentenced. He was convicted of causing the death of one of his friends in a car crash in North Lanarkshire and this week broke down in tears as he was jailed for three years. His passenger Anthony Reilly, 17, suffered head injuries and later died in the crash which Judge Lord Bonomy said was "three minutes" of "recklessness and stupidity".
Builder Fined After Worker Crushed
A lorry-trailer building company in Trafford has been fined after a worker was crushed by more than two tonnes of metal. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted S Cartwright and Sons (Coachbuilders) Ltd following the incident in Broadheath near Altrincham. The company was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £18,315 towards the cost of the prosecution at Manchester Crown Court. The court heard that David Jones was helping to move a stack of 6.7 metre-long metal strips onto a trailer on 13 March 2008 when the incident happened. The stack and lifting beam, weighing a total of 2.2 tonnes, fell onto him from the forks of a forklift truck.
