Hopes For Hijacked Couple
Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has said that progress was being made and he was "hopeful" about the release of a British couple seized by pirates. Sheikh Ahmed expressed regret about the capture of Paul and Rachel Chandler, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and said efforts were being made to secure their release at the "earliest possible date". He confirmed that the Somali government was working to find a "peaceful resolution" to the plight of the couple after they were seized in October last year by Somali pirates while sailing from the Seychelles towards Tanzania.
Navy Women Going Underwater
Reports that the Royal Navy may lift a ban on women serving on submarines are speculation, the Ministry of Defence said today, but a decision will be made on the matter later this year. Last month the United States moved to relax similar rules preventing women from deploying on submarines. It has been reported that groups of five women officers will initially be deployed with Britain's four Vanguard-class, nuclear submarines, which each have a crew of 135.
Streets Going To The Dogs
London police are taking the most dangerous dogs off the streets and have seized more than 1,000 animals. That's according to the Metropolitan Police's Status Dog Unit which was formed to tackle the growing problem of violent animals in the capital. The team, made up of a sergeant, five constables and civilian worker, is responsible for targeting those who breed, sell and fight dogs. They are supported by a senior RSPCA officer who uses his expertise and enforcement powers to ensure dogs are kept in the right conditions.
Since its launch on March 2 last year, staff have seized more than 1,070 dogs, including 900 pit bulls.
Driver's Escape 'Remarkable'
A car driver has had what firefighters described as a "remarkable" escape after his vehicle was crushed under a truck in a pile-up near York. The 28-year-old suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in the crash on the A64 late on Monday night. He was trapped when a lorry shunted his car under a recovery truck. The Fire Service's Trevor Lund said the injured man's car was "in effect demolished" in the incident. "It's one of the most remarkable escape stories I have seen in 28 years," he said.
