Pay Review For Prison Staff
UK prison staff should receive a 1% pay rise, the Prison Service Pay Review Body recommended today.
The Body's report makes recommendations on the pay of governing governors and other operational managers, prison officers and related support grades in public sector prisons in England and Wales in 2010.
A 1% consolidated increase will be given to all prison workers.
An additional 0.5% rise will be given to senior officers (giving a 1.5% increase in total) to ensure a pay differential, which the Home Office said provides an incentive for prison officers to seek promotion.
There will be a 1% uplift to the Required Hours Addition (RHA), where payable, to Senior Managers D and Managers E to G.
Prisons Minister Maria Eagle said the Government values the "challenging, demanding and sometimes dangerous work done by prison staff".
"I confirm that the Government has been able to accept in full the Pay Review Body’s headline award recommendations, effective from 1 April 2010," she said.
"The award arising from the Pay Review Body’s recommendations is consistent with public sector pay as announced in the 2009 Pre-Budget Report."
National Offender Management Service (NOMS) Director General Phil Wheatley said:" I note the Pay Review Body’s recommendations this year and welcome the Government’s decisions to both accept the headline settlement and continue to support our progress on reform of NOMS pay systems and policies.
"This is challenging but it is in the long term interest of the service and staff that we press ahead with as much structured reform of our pay systems as we can within the budget that is available."

Prison officers suspended over corruption claims
Fourteen prison officers have been suspended from HMP Pentonville following allegations of corruption. A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed that the prison officers had been suspended over allegations which concerned trafficking and "inappropriate relations" with prisoners.

Union anger at health sector pay rises
Unions have reacted angrily to the government's announcement that pay for nurses and other healthcare professions has been pegged below inflation. Nurses and other health care professionals will get 2.5%, 1.5% in April and 1% in November. General dental practitioners will get 2% but there is nothing on offer for general medical practitioners.

Female managers over 40 years old are earning 35% less than men, according to new data by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and XpertHR. To earn the same as a male manager over a career, a woman would have to work the equivalent of over 14 years more.

Funding Boost Of £455m For Equal Pay Claims
Funding of £455m will be awarded to councils in England to allow back payments relating to thousands of equal pay claims from women workers. In a move to speed up long-term commitments to achieving equal pay for all council workers, local government minister John Healey gave the go-ahead to 34 councils to raise the money through capitlisation.
