BA Crew Announce Strike
British Airways cabin crew will stage a seven day walkout over pay and work conditions, workers' union Unite has confirmed.
Flight attendants will strike for three days from 20 March and for four days from 27 March.
Unite Assistant General Secretary Len McCluskey, who led the BA negotiations, said management at the airline had rejected a "remarkable offer".
"The company contests our calculations, but quibbles over the precise costing of our concessions pale into insignificance compared to the losses that BA will sustain in the event of an industrial dispute," he said.
BA management submitted a formal offer of its own to Unite yesterday.
"It is right that cabin crew should be given the opportunity to consider this offer, although it falls short of what we believe is needed to address the legitimate concerns they have about crew complement and service delivery," said Mr McCluskey.
"However, we are unable to recommend the offer, and are therefore also setting strike dates in accordance with the mandate the union has twice overwhelmingly secured from our members."
Strikes are planned for March 20, 21 and 22 and further on March 27, 28, 29 and 30.
There will be no strikes over the Easter period, as promised by the union.
However, Unite said further industrial action will be called to take place after April 14 if the dispute has not been resolved.
BA said it was "extremely disappointed" that Unite had announced strike action.
It has already trained 1,000 staff to work as cabin crew to cover for any striking workers.

BA Prepares For Second Strike
British Airways will fly more than 75% of customers booked to travel between tomorrow and March 30, despite these four days being targeted for strikes by Unite. The airline said approximately 240,000 customers originally booked to travel in the strike period, the airline expects to fly more than 180,000.

The Labour party leader has 'turned on' a leading trade union and slammed their planned walk-out. Prime Minister Gordon Brown used a radio interview this morning to hit out at the Unite union as talks with its leadership failed to produce a breakthrough and a three-day stoppage by airline cabin crew looms for this weekend.
