Hoax Aberdeen Bomber Pleads Guilty
A man has pleaded guilty to leaving a hoax bomb on Aberdeen's Guild Street.
Colin Pirie, appearing at the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday, also admitted making bomb threats on 21 January.
Detective Chief Inspector Malcolm Stewart said his officers had carried out "excellent forensic work", making it possible to identify Pirie as a suspect.
"Following a search of his address, we found various parts of electrical devices and other things which were component parts of the device he left," said DCI Stewart.
"Clearly it was very ill-conceived and he was very upfront about it. He knew he was appearing in court that day and he was expecting a custodial sentence.
"He thought he would delay it, but obviously that offence was never going to go away and he would have to appear in court some day."
Police said the hoax alerts were a "complete waste of a lot of people's time and effort", causing congestion and traffic chaos for commuters in the city that morning.
Colin Pirie is expected to be sentenced on 29 April 2010 at the High Court in Aberdeen.
