Man Arrested In Mersey Murder Probe
Police in Merseyside have launched a murder investigation after the discovery of the body of an elderly woman in Stoneycroft yesterday.
Emergency services were called at arround 10.40pm on Tuesday to a report of a fire at a property on Gorsewood Road, Belle Vale.
The fire was extinguished by the fireservice and a search was conducted of the property. No one was injured during the incident.
A short time later a 38-year-old man from the local area was arrested nearby on suspicion of arson.
Officers then conducted a search of the man's home address on Moscow Drive at about 12.30am yesterday where they found the body of an elderly female believed to be in her 70s.
The woman had received an injury believed to have been caused by a knife.
Detectives said they are continuing to investigate and a Home Office Post Mortem is due to take place to establish the cause of death.
The woman has not yet been formally identified.
The 38-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arson is also to be questioned about the death of this woman. He remains in custody.
Detective Superintendent Ian Mulcahey said: "At this early stage of the investigation we are working to piece together what has happened. The victim was found at the property this morning and we are appealing for anyone who has any information to come forward.
"We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information to get in touch with us."

Police Dig Up Pub Patio In Search For Missing Landlady
Police investigating the disappearance of a landlady in Cambridgeshire in 1997 are digging up the patio of her former pub. Deborah Steel, 37, was landlady of the Royal Standard in Ely, Cambridgeshire, when she disappeared on 28 December 1997. Police have said that Ms Steel's disappearance is now being treated as a murder investigation.

Wanted Man Arrested In London
The man wanted in connection with the murder of a 66-year-old man who intervened during a robbery, has been arrested. Ian John McLoughlin, 55, was arrested in London at around 01:00. He was wanted on suspicion of murder and robbery. Airports and ports had been put on alert as police hinted for McLoughlin.
