DNA Crackdown On Burglars
Surrey Police is running a series of schemes specifically designed to target residential burglary using the innovative property marking solution SelectaDNA.
After being piloted in Woking, 600 homeowners in Guildford, Elmbridge, and Epsom and Ewell, will now be given the opportunity to take advantage of a free SelectaDNA property marking kit.
SelectaDNA is a uniquely coded non-toxic liquid which can be easily painted on to items of value such as laptops, TVs, games consoles and jewellery.
The liquid is clear but shows up under UV light. If a marked item is stolen and recovered by police it can be traced back to the owner via the specific DNA code.
Marked property will be registered onto a secure national database allowing it to be traced back to the owner wherever it is recovered.
Jamie Robinson, Force Crime Reduction Advisor, said: "These projects are most effective when local people are kept well-informed and have been encouraged to do something about crime in their area.
"SelectaDNA's main strength is its deterrent value. The fear factor comes into play as burglars are aware that DNA property marking is helping police to convict criminals."
Many anti-burglary schemes across the UK have already been launched using SelectaDNA and in some areas it has been proven that by marking belongings and displaying warning stickers, burglaries can be reduced by up to 85%.

Nearly 200 crimes missed by DNA failings
Nearly 200 crimes went undetected due to failings over DNA samples, it has been revealed. The failure to archive DNA evidence resulted in 183 crimes going undetected, including one paedophile offence, three robberies, nine burglaries, 19 drugs offences and 62 thefts, the National DNA Database annual report revealed.

Buckfast Distributor Challenges Police Bottle Marking
Legal action is being taken to stop Strathclyde Police adding their own anti-crime labels to bottles of Buckfast. Distributor of the tonic wine, J Chandler & Co, say the practice of bottle marking stigmatises the brand. The company will lodge a case at the court of session on Friday.

New Unit To Tackle Online Piracy
A new police unit has been announced that will seek to tackle intellectual property crimes such as online piracy and counterfeit goods. Intellectual Property Minister, Lord Younger and City of London Police Commissioner, Adrian Leppard launched the unit today. The government claims it will be one of the first units of its kind in the world.

Mass DNA Swabbing Operation Underway In Leeds
Police in Leeds are carrying out a mass DNA swabbing operation as part of a rape and attempted murder investigation. An 18-year-old woman was attacked on 06 March in Beeston. She was dragged from a bus stop and bludgeoned with a stone before being sexually assaulted.

2011 House Prices Down 3%
Britain's house prices have tumbled by another 3% this year according to official figures published on Monday morning. The October data from Land Registry's flagship House Price Index showed an annual price decrease of 3.2%, which takes the average property value in England and Wales to £159,999.
