Royal Marine Killed On Patrol
Yet another UK soldier has died in Afghanistan. The victim, a Royal Marine, was killed in an explosion - the Ministry of Defence has said.
He died in a blast while on foot patrol in Sangin, Helmand Province on Sunday morning, as top politicians and military and civic leaders were gathering in London to mark the 65 anniversary of VE Day, when Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces in Europe.
A spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said: "He was part of a foot patrol in an operation which was being conducted in support of the Afghan National Army when he was struck by an explosion.
"He died in the course of his duty, seeking to provide reassurance and security to the local nationals in Sangin. He will be sorely missed and his sacrifice will not be forgotten."
The marine's death brings the British death toll since operations began in 2001 to 285.
