British Soldier Dies After Afghan Blast
A British soldier who was injured in an explosion in Afghanistan has died in hospital in the UK, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
The soldier, from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, was wounded in an explosion while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on July 4. The patrol was providing protection for the clearance of a road in the Upper Gereshk Valley.
The solider was treated at the scene and at Camp Bastion, before being flown to the UK for further treatment. However, he died on Monday, surrounded by his family, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Commanding officer Major Ronnie Goodwin said: "He gave his life trying to improve the lives of people in Helmand by providing much needed reassurance and security. He will be missed and remembered by all ranks of 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment."

MoD names British soldier killed in Iraq
The Ministry of Defence has named the British soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on Tuesday night. Sergeant Christian Hickey, of the 1st Battalion the Coldstream Guards, died as a result of his injuries, following the explosion, which took place around 11:23 local time in Basra on Tuesday night.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the death of a soldier from the 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Staffords), who was killed on Saturday 18 June 2011. The soldier was shot while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj (North) District of Helmand Province in Afghanistan and died of his injuries.
