Mercy Killing 'Time Waster' Gosling Charged
BBC presenter Ray Gosling is to be charged with wasting police time over claims that he killed his terminally ill gay lover.
Mr Gosling, 71, from Nottingham, is to be charged over claims made in an interview with Bill Turnbull on BBC Breakfast in February that he smothered the man, who was dying of Aids.
Mr Gosling had first made the claims on a BBC Inside Out documentary on mercy killings on February 15, where he claimed that the doctor had told them that there was nothing that could be done and that his lover was in "terrible, terrible pain",
Mr Gosling then claimed that he had asked the doctor to leave and he then smothered the man.
The presenter was then interviewed about the claims by Mr Turnbull the following day.
He was arrested on suspicion of murder and then freed on bail after the broadcast.
A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service said that there was sufficient evidence to prove that Mr Gosling's claims were false and that Notitnghamshire police had been informed that he should be charged with wasting police time.
He has been summoned to appear before Nottingham Magistrates Court on September 14.
