Dissidents Claim Car Bomb Attack
The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for an explosion in Derry in the early hours, which caused substantial damage to a shopping centre.
Speaking in Birmingham for the Conservative Party conference, Martin McGuinness, Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister, has accused the group of trying to drag the city back to its violent past.
He said he is disgusted by the attack, which damaged several business properties.
He added: "We have seen over the course of recent times that there is still a tiny minority of people who believe that this sort of activity will advance their objectives.
"It is quite clear their objectives cannot be advanced and these deeds are totally futile."
The car bomb, planted in a Vauxhall Corsa, exploded on the Culmore Road, Londonderry.
No-one was injured but several properties including the Ulster Bank and nearby Da Vinci's hotel and restaurant complex have been damaged.
The explosion went off just after midnight, approximately one hour after a telephone warning was made by the dissident group.
Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated before the explosion.
SDLP Mayor Colm Eastwood said he was disgusted by the attack.
He commented: "I do not know what these people are hoping to achieve. They say they love their country but they spend time trying to destroy it.
"The people of this city will be very angry.
"It's shocking that someone would put a bomb anywhere, but especially at a commercial centre."

MoD names soldier killed in Iraq
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the name of a British soldier killed in a bomb explosion in Iraq on Sunday. Major Matthew Bacon, 34, from the London area, was travelling in an armoured landrover in Basra, southern Iraq, when a roadside bomb exploded, hitting the vehicle.

Earlier this afternoon, five missiles were fired into Camp Dogwood; one failed to detonate and was later destroyed in a controlled explosion. Suicide bomb attack injures two British soldiers in Iraq
Two British soldiers are being treated in Germany for injuries sustained following a suicide car-bomb attack on an armoured vehicle near to Camp Dogwood. The two army technical officers who were on attachment with the Black Watch were flown to Germany for medical treatment to serious injuries to their lower legs.
