Comic Norman Mourned
The madcap British comedian and actor Norman Wisdom has died at the age of 95.
His family said he died peacefully late on Monday in his adopted home on the Isle of Man in a nursing home having suffered from a series of strokes in the months before his death.
He loved golfing - even though his friend and fellow comedian, Frank Carson revealed that "he wasn't very good at it" but was often across to visit Frank in Northern Ireland on charity-funding raising golf events.
Norman Wisdom had belied his miserable childhood by specializing in family-friendly slapstick comedy in the 1950s and 1960s.
He was known for his roles as a clumsy underdog battling against adversity.
He also acted in Broadway in the 1960s, when he was nominated for a Tony Award for his work in the comedy Walking Happy.
His films included Trouble In Store in 1953 and The Night They Raided Minsky's in 1968, which he made in Hollywood. His subsequent career was largely based in television.
