Pregnancy Weight Advice 'Lacking'
According to a UK-wide survey, many woman are not receiving proper advice on weight management during and after pregnancy. 63% reported that their midwife had not discussed obesity issues such as body mass index (BMI) during antenatal appointments. The poll, conducted by the Royal College of Midwives and website Netmums, included 6,226 women. The survey found that six out of 10 felt pressurised to lose weight quickly after giving birth due to celebrity culture. Developing conditions such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes is more common with obese, pregnant women. They are also more likely to experience miscarriages, difficult deliveries, pre-term births and caesarean sections. Of those missing out on weight advice during pregnancy, nine out of 10 said that after giving birth they had had no opportunity to discuss concerns with their midwife. 84% said the general advice on weight management was not good. The survey also suggested that lack of care had damaged many mothers' self-esteem.
Lanarkshire Farm Safety Event Aims To Cut Deaths
Farmers from across Lanarkshire are encouraged to attend a free half day event this week for practical advice in dealing with the dangers of working in agriculture. The latest figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that the sector is still one of the most dangerous in Great Britain. Eight agricultural workers died in Scotland in 2009/2010, and a further 78 major injuries were reported. The two half day events, organised by HSE, will feature practical safety demonstrations focusing on the daily hazards which farm workers face, such as tractor safety, child safety, powered take-off shaft safety, working at height, manual handling, handling livestock and trailer braking and maintenance. The demonstrations will be delivered by qualified trainers from LANTRA and will include hints and tips on simple and low cost precautions that can be taken to keep farmers, their families, agricultural workers and members of the public safe. Advisors from the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives will be present at the event to provide practical face to face advice on any issues related to occupational health, safety and wellbeing. The free events will take place at Lawrie and Symington Limited, Lanark Agricultural Centre, Hyndford Road, Lanark on Thursday 18 November.

At the time of the snatch, an employee was dealing with a group of people when a man who was not with the group took the book from under an unsecured glass display box. A woman allegedly acted as look out. The book was on display as part of an exhibition.
