Chaytor Pleads Guilty Over Expenses
Ex MP David Chaytor has pleaded guilty to false accounting over Parliamentary expenses totalling £18,350.
Chaytor, 61, accepted the verdict relating to three charges after changing his plea at the Old Bailey just days before the start of his trial.
Between 2005 and 2006, Chaytor claimed £12,925 for renting a flat in Regency Street. After apparently producing a "tenancy agreement", it was later revealed that he owned the lease to the flat.
The second charge relates to £5,425 in rent he claimed for a house in Bury which his mother owned.
In 2006, he also falsely claimed £1,950 worth of IT support for work that did not take place.
The maximum sentence of seven years in jail would normally apply however due to a guilty plea his sentence is likely to be more lenient.
Chaytor was granted bail and will be sentenced on January 7 at Southwark Crown Court.
The former Labour MP for Bury North is the first Politician to be convicted in connection with the expenses scandal.
Three other ex-MPs and two peers have also been charged.
Last year's expense scandal saw hundreds of MPs pay back a total £1.12m.
