Brothers Jailed Over Father's Murder

An east London man who killed his father has been jailed at the Old Bailey. John Heath, 34, of Oban Street, Poplar pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to the murder of his father, 65-year-old Charles (Charlie) Heath. He also pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He was jailed for life, to serve a minimum of 12 years. His brother, Robert Heath, 28, of Oban Street, Poplar pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to perverting the course of justice. He was jailed for 30 months. Police were called to Oban Street, east London around 9.20pm on Sunday 15 November 2009, following neighbours' concerns for the welfare of Charlie Heath. On arrival police discovered the body of Charlie Heath. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A post mortem examination was unable to establish a formal cause of death due to decomposition. However the victim had sustained head injuries, which John Heath admitted he had caused by hitting him with a hammer. He also admitted smothering his father with a pillow. It is believed the fatal injuries were inflicted during an argument in October. John Heath and his brother Robert Heath were arrested at the Oban Street address on Sunday, 15 November. Both were charged with his murder. John Heath was subsequently convicted of the murder. No evidence was offered in respect of the murder charge against Robert Heath, who was convicted of perverting the course of justice.

Workers Exposed To Asbestos At Aston University

A Birmingham-based university has been fined, along with a security systems firm, after two workers were exposed to dangerous asbestos fibres while fitting CCTV cameras. The worker and a 17-year-old trainee were installing the cameras in the reception area at Aston University's Recreation Centre in July 2009 when they drilled into material containing asbestos fibres. Both the university and Warwickshire-based Access Fire and Security Ltd - the contractor carrying out the work - were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following the incident. Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard the university failed to follow its own procedures on managing, planning and preparing for the installation and the arrangements were unclear and not widely known within the university. Aston University, of Aston Triangle, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to breaching Control of Asbestos Regulations and was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 costs. Access Fire and Security Ltd, Henley-in-Arden, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations and was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs.
