Southwark Murder Investigation Underway
Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of a young man in Southwark. At around 4.35am on Sunday 5 December, police officers and the London Ambulance Service were called to reports of an altercation on Southwark Street, south east London. A man in his early 20s was taken to Royal London Hospital suffering from head injuries - he later died during the early hours of Monday 6 December. Next of kin are aware but await formal identification. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course. An incident room under Detective Chief Inspector Dave Manning has been opened. DCI Manning, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: "At this early stage we believed the victim spent Saturday night/Sunday morning with friends in the club La Pollero Collera, London Bridge. It would appear that between the hours of 4.00hrs and 4.30hrs, the victim and his friends were involved in some sort of disagreement with another group of people inside the club. A fracas broke out and the victim, with one of his friends, was ejected from the club by security. Shortly after he was attacked by a group of people on Southwark Street. Even though it was the early hours of Sunday, La Pollero Collera, Southwark Street and the general area would have been busy with people including night workers, commuters and revellers leaving the club. I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the altercation inside the club, or witnessed any part of the assault on Southwark Street, to contact the police. I would like to assure any witnesses that they will be treated with the utmost sensitivity."
Police Swoop On Excise Fraud
Twenty men have been arrested in an estimated £50 million excise duty and VAT fraud linked to the abuse of the international bonded warehouse system. The men were arrested by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) criminal investigators during co-ordinated raids on 12 commercial and 17 domestic premises across the South East and the Midlands. Co-ordinated searches are also being undertaken in Germany. It is suspected that alcohol, bought duty free and said to be destined for markets in the European Union, was smuggled back onto the UK market without the appropriate payment of excise duty and VAT. Bob Gaiger, HM Revenue & Customs Spokesman said: “HMRC criminal investigators have uncovered a suspected multi-million pound excise duty and VAT fraud. Over 200 HMRC officers, supported by the police, took part in the operation. The operation spanned a number of counties and led to the arrest of twenty people. Our investigations are continuing.” The twenty men are currently being interviewed by HMRC officers. Investigations are continuing.
Two Killed At Chipboard Factory
Two workers have died at a Merseyside chipboard factory. Police, fire crews and emergency services were called to the Sonae factory in Kirkby around 1545 GMT. The men died at the scene. A joint investigation has been launched by Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive. Inquiries are now under way and the area has been cordoned off. Sonae, which makes woodchip for the construction and furniture industries, was fined £35,000 in 2003 for its part in an accident at the plant in which a worker broke his leg when he caught it in a piece of machinery.
