Progress Made On Learning Difficulties Services
People with learning disabilities have seen increasing improvements across the health, employment and housing sectors, Care Services Minister Paul Burstow will announce later today.
Speaking at the Learning Disability Today Conference, Mr Burstow will outline progress that has been made over the past eighteen months as he launches the Valuing People Now Summary Report. Valuing People Now is a three year cross-government strategy developed to help improve the lives of people with learning disabilities. It aims to tackle the challenges that people with learning disabilities tend to face and covers all aspects of life, including health, housing, getting a paid job, personalisation, transition, advocacy, hate crime and relationships.
Key improvements outlined in the progress report include:
Care Services Minister, Paul Burstow said: “There are almost a million people with learning disabilities in England and although today’s report shows that good progress has been made - many people still experience challenges when it comes to their health, employment and housing needs. We have made up to £2 billion a year extra available over the next four years in social care. This means that alongside efficiency savings, that there is enough funding available both to protect people's access to services and deliver new approaches to improve quality and outcomes."

- A continuing increase in people having an annual health check
- Increasingly more people moving into their own homes from residential campuses
- Real successes in people finding jobs through Project Search, Getting a Life and Jobs First

NHS Disability Care 'Failures' Slammed In Report
Care for people with learning disabilities has come under fire after a report found the NHS and councils failed to provide appropriate health and social services care. The Health Service and Local Government Ombudsman ruled that one man died as a result of these failings and the death of a second man could have been avoided.

Patients 'suffering abuse', report claims
A report into the treatment and care of people with learning disabilities has uncovered widespread abuse of patients. The report, by the Healthcare Commission and Commission for Social Care Inspection, said that there was "serious concerns" over the care of patients.

Govt Launch Employment Drive For Disabled People
A campaign has been launched to help people with disabilities get into the workplace. The initiative was launched at a disability employment conference in London today. It will include internships and training for young disabled people and a government-funded scheme for 16-to-24-year-olds who have complex learning difficulties and disabilities.

Guidance on crime protection for vulnerable adults published
The Home Office has published guidance on how vulnerable adults and those with learning difficulties can protect themselves from crime. The 'Keep Safe' booklet contains advice on how to keep safe when at home and outside alone, including tips on using public transport and cash machines.
