Man Jailed For Sexually Abusing Children

An east London man has been sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment for sexual assault. Snaresbrook Crown Court sentenced Ashraf Miah, 38, following 13 charges of sexual assault by touching, against six girls, one as young as 4-years-old, who were in his care during 2005 and 2009. The offences happened when Miah was entrusted to teach young females to read from the Koran at his home address as well as the student's address. The crimes came to light when Miah was arrested in November 2009 for offences against two of the girls. During the investigation, dealt with by detectives from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, other children that had been taught by Miah were contacted and more offences were reported, leading to his arrest in January 2010. Thirteen charges followed in April 2010 when he appeared before Thames Magistrates' Court. He was convicted on all thirteen counts. He was sentenced to three years and three months imprisonment, put on the sex offenders register for life and is not allowed to work with children.

The officer leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant Martin Bird from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, said: "The tragedy of this case is that a highly respected member of the community took advantage of their position of trust. It goes to show that even if someone thinks they have got away with it at the time, young people are brave enough to come forward and testify at court."

Man Jailed For Machete Attack

A 23-year-old man from the Isle of Dogs has been sentenced to an indefinite period of imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court following an attack in 2010 in which the victim lost an eye. Saifour Rahman, of Charnwood Gardens, East London was sentenced with a recommendation to serve a minimum seven and a half years, for GBH with intent and violent disorder. He had been found guilty on 25 October 2010 of the serious assault in Westferry Road, East London, on 27 April of the same year. At 9.45pm, the victim and two of his friends were standing outside the Perfect Fried Chicken takeaway. A group of Asian males ran towards them along Westferry Road, brandishing machetes, poles and wooden sticks. Saifour Rahman was seen to be leading the group, himself carrying a machete with which he struck the victim in the face. Rahman attempted to strike another male around the head but the man managed to duck in time, avoiding serious injury. He was, however caught to the rear of his head causing bruising. At the time of the assault, the victim's father was working at a nearby shop and witnessed the incident take place before he had time to go to the aid of his son. As a result of the assault, the victim received massive trauma injuries resulting in the complete loss of his left eye. The blow also severed his nose completely at the bridge and he will require facial reconstructive surgery.

Building Contractor Fined After Serious Failings Found

A Gloucester building contractor has been fined after employees were found to have lifted heavy building materials at height with no measures to prevent falls in place. Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors visited a site in Dumbleton, Gloucestershire, in December 2009 and found structural steelwork weighing 92kg had been lifted into place using scaffolding only five feet high during construction of a house extension. Inspectors found no risk assessment in place which would have highlighted the unsuitability of this method of work. The men had lifted the steelwork from the floor onto the scaffold and then stood on the scaffold to fit the structure into final position. No measures had been taken to prevent or mitigate falls from the scaffold. This had happened on more than one occasion and the inspection also found the scaffolding had no edge protection. He concluded the work was not adequately planned or managed. DA Cook (Builders) Limited, based in Winchcombe, pleaded guilty at Gloucester Magistrates Court of failing to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,800.
