MP Admits False Accounting
The Metropolitan Police welcomed today's guilty pleas that follow a thorough and detailed investigation of Eric Illsley's parliamentary claims whilst a Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central.
Eric Illsley, 55, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to three false accounting charges over claims for council tax, maintenance, repairs and utility bills for his second home at Southwark Crown Court.
After previously denying all charges, he admitted fraudulently claiming more than £14,000 in parliamentary expenses.
In May, he was re-elected as Labour MP for Barnsley Central, but was suspended after being charged and now sits as an independent.
Last week, former Labour MP David Chaytor was the first person to be jailed over the Westminster expenses scandal.
Of those facing court, Illsley is the only serving MP.
He will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on a date to be confirmed.

England and Sunderland footballer, Adam Johnson, has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of having sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl. The footballer, 27, was questioned by Durham Police on Monday. Sunderland AFC have suspended the player pending the outcome of the investigation.

Afganistan Conflict Claims 87th UK Soldier's Life
Another soldier has been killed in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. The death brings the number of UK troops killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 87. He was killed and several others were injured when their vehicle was blown up by a mine 3km (1.8 miles) north east of Musa Qala, the MoD statement said.

Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie has been arrested in his native Holland on suspicion of rape, it has been announced. The 21-year-old Premiership player, who is training with the Dutch national squad in Rotterdam, was arrested following claims made a 21-year-old woman.
