Belfast Prison Deaths Probed
Following this week's deaths of two prisoners at Belfast's Hydebank Young Offenders Centre in south Belfast, the tragedies are to be the subject of three separate investigations.
The PSNI, coroner and prisoner ombudsman will investigate the deaths. The prison service said a ligature had been removed from each prisoner's cell but the two prisoners did not appear to have known each other and the deaths were not linked.
Samuel Carson, 19, died shortly after 5pm on Wednesday despite efforts by prison staff to revive him in his cell at the prison's Elm 1 wing and Frances McKeown, 23, was found in her cell a few hours later in Ash 4 wing.

Prison officers suspended over corruption claims
Fourteen prison officers have been suspended from HMP Pentonville following allegations of corruption. A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed that the prison officers had been suspended over allegations which concerned trafficking and "inappropriate relations" with prisoners.

Prisons face overcrowding crisis
Prisons in England and Wales are under "enormous pressure" and are facing a "looming overcrowding crisis", according to a charity report. The Prison Reform Trust reported that prison numbers have crept up again since Christmas rising to over 77,000 again.

Call For Degree Educated Prison Officers
A charity for Penal Reform has today released a report recommending that prison officers are educated to degree level in order to better manage prisons and reduce reoffending rates. At present, prison officers undergo eight weeks training before taking responsibility for safety and security within a prison.

Suffering the virus that causes warts and verrucas can increase the risk of certain cancers. An international team of researchers has found that people with several types of the virus - human papillomaviruses (HPVs) - were more than one and a half times as likely to develop certain skin cancers compared to people with no HPVs.

Government pledges cash for stem cell research
The government has announced that an extra £50 million will be made available for UK stem cell research over the next two years. The announcement followed the publication of the UK Stem Cell Initiative report, which has recommended that that the government should invest at least £350 million in the research over the next decade.
