E. Coli Outbreak Impacts UK Food Producers
The Environment Secretary has spoken about the impact of the recent E.coli outbreak in the UK.
Caroline Spelman today made a statement to Parliament on the German E. coli outbreak affecting UK food producers.
She said: “It is deeply regrettable that this outbreak has resulted in the loss of life. It has also had a disruptive economic impact on growers and others within the supply chain for fruit and vegetables across the EU, including our domestic industry.
“At retail level, prices for domestically produced salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers and courgettes), have remained relatively stable, although demand has declined, with the result that more produce is being sent to the wholesale market, which is experiencing movement in prices. I welcome the support for UK producers shown by the big retailers who have in some cases increased their offering of UK salad produce, in response to consumer demand for our home crops.”
Ms Spelman added: “The impacts of the overall situation are being felt across the EU and because of this, the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 7 June discussed the need for exceptional measures to address the market situation and to provide financial support for growers affected. Proposals were discussed by Ministers at Council level and considered by officials at the EU Fruit and Vegetables Management Committee but no package has yet been agreed for implementation. Discussions will continue on 14 June.”

BBC Homosexual Web Complaint Rejected
A complaint about a headline on the BBC News website which asked 'Should homosexuals face execution?' has been rejected by the BBC Trust. The headline had been posted on a moderated talkboard discussion ahead of a World Service programme Africa Have Your Say about the controversial anti-homosexuality bill which was proposed in Uganda last December.

Alcohol Ads 'Pushing Boundaries'
Some UK alcohol producers are "pushing the boundaries" of advertising rules by still managing to appeal to young people, it has been claimed. Professor Gerard Hastings said companies are "in the last chance saloon" of the advertising code of practice. He suggested the UK system of self regulatory controls for alcohol advertising is failing.

Economic X Factor Makes Headlines
The outgoing Chairman of ITV has reported that it is a strong possibility that regional news could be phased out in favour of programmes such as X-Factor, I'm a Celebrity, Doc Martin and Coronation Street. Michael Grade's apparent threat is aimed at any future Conservative government deciding to overturn Ofcom's regional news pilot scheme.
