Women's Pensions Debate Underway

The Government debate on whether women should wait longer to receive their state pension will get underway in the Commons today.

The revision of the Pensions Bill could see the entitlement age go from 60 to 65 by 2018, and to 66 for men and women by 2020.

Describing the move as unfair, critics across all parties say it would affect around 330,000 women in their late 50s who will need to keep working. However Ministers say the changes will proceed.

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said: "If we delayed the move to 66, it would cost the taxpayer £10bn and would be an unfair burden on the next generation."
