Inflation Figures To Push Up Rail Prices
Rail travellers will face price rises of around 8% next year, following the release of the latest inflation figures.
July's RPI inflation figure, which determines the rise in regulated fares such as season tickets and long-distance off-peak tickets, remained at 5%.
However, the new formula for fare increases is RPI plus 3% for the next three years, compared to plus 1% in previous years, which means customers could face ticket price rises of up to 8%.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said that "very difficult decisions" had to be taken on rail fares in order to ensure a better deal for passengers and tax payers.
However, the move has been criticised by the Campaign for Better Transport's Alexandra Woodsworth, who said: "Affordable rail travel is vital for passengers, for the environment and for our workforce. These massive fare rises will be a disaster for people already struggling with rising costs, and risk pricing those on lower incomes out of jobs in our major cities."
