Philip Lawrence Killer 'Cleared Of Robbery'

The man who killed headteacher Philip Lawrence in 1995 has been cleared of using his notoriety to intimidate and rob a man at a cash machine.

Learco Chindamo, 31, was alleged to have approached David Sexton, 20, in north London last November and threatened him to hand over money, saying: "Do you remember about the headteacher in Maida Vale?"

However, Chindamo told police that he had been provoked by a man who had called him a "killer".

Chindamo had consistently denied robbery. Three previous trials had also collapsed, before he was acquitted yesterday at London's Blackfriars Crown Court.

Chindamo hugged his co-defendant Gregory Janato as the verdict was announced. He will remain in custody pending a review of his case.

Chidnamo served nearly 14 years in jail for the murder of Philip Lawrence in 1995. Mr Lawrence, a father-of-four, was assaulted and stabbed in the heart as he tried to protect one of his pupils who was being attacked outside St George's school in Maida Vale in London.
