Immigration Rises By A Fifth
Net migration to the UK rose by 21% in the last year, with 239,000 more people arriving in the country than those leaving, the latest official figures have revealed.
This compares to 198,000 in 2009, undermining the Government's pledge to reduce the number of immigrants to "tens of thousands" by 2015.
The figures from the Office of National Statistics showed that the number of people arriving in the UK to take up a definite job fell to 110,000, while the total number leaving the UK to take up work elsewhere also fell to 179,000.
However, the number of work visas issued and admissions for work rose slightly to 161,000 and 163,00, respectively.
The number of applications for asylum also rose last year, with 4,800 applications between April and June. The ONS said that this was mainly due to applications from Pakistan and Libya.
Matt Cavanagh, Associate Director of the Institute for Public Policy Research, said: "Politicians shouldn't promise what they can't deliver, particularly on immigration. Before the election, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats said immigration was out of control; afterwards, they said they would cut it dramatically. Neither was true."

Asylum applications 'lowest level in a decade'
Asylum applications have fallen to their lowest level for more than a decade, according to the latest figures published by the Home Office. The figures showed that there were 6,165 applications in the last quarter of 2005 - a 2% drop from the previous quarter and 27% lower than the same period in 2004.

Almost 200,000 More People Now In Work
The latest employment figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the number of people in work rose by 193,000 to 30.15 million in the three months to December. The number of people unemployed fell to 2.34 million, a drop of 125,000, for the same period. The unemployment rate now stands at 7.2% with the employment rate at 72.

New figures have shown that unemployment rose by 7,000 between November and January; bringing the total to 2.52 million. The Office for National Statistics figures also show that the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) in February fell by 1,500 to 1.54 million, the lowest level since June 2011.

Appeal For Witnesses To Serious Road Accident
North Wales Police have appealed for witnesses to a serious road accident on Sunday. A woman has been left with "significant injuries" after two vehicles crashed on the B4421 between Newborough and Llangaffo at about 20:00 on Sunday. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number, 101.
