Riots Costly

The cost of policing the riots in Manchester and Salford last month is expected to be £10m, it has emerged. Greater Manchester Police Authority is already facing a £5million bill, which includes overtime for officers, damage to equipment and bringing in officers to deal with the disorder. If the bill rises as expected, it will be the equivalent of paying the wages of 430 new recruits for a year in a force which is being forced to shed 1,500 of its 8,000 posts over the next four years as it attempts to save £134m as a result of budget cuts.

Match Death Probed

Six men have been arrested after a football fan died following an attack outside Wembley stadium ahead of an England v Wales match. It happened just before the Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday night. The victim - named by fellow football supporters as Cardiff City fan Mike Dye - was found with head injuries on a concourse area outside the turnstiles at around 7.20pm. It is thought the 44-year-old also suffered a heart attack.

M-Way Woman Jailed

A drunken woman who drove the wrong way for 23 miles on the M5 in Somerset has been jailed for nine months. Deborah Hunt, 43, from Langport, drove north on the southbound carriageway of the motorway in July, from Bridgwater towards Weston-super-Mare. She was twice over the drink-drive limit and had no insurance, Bristol Crown Court was told.

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Canon Timothy John Dakin, BA, MTh, General Secretary of the Church Mission Society, Associate Priest of Ruscombe and Twyford in Oxford Diocese and Honorary Canon Theologian at Coventry Cathedral, for election as Bishop of Winchester in succession to the Right Reverend Michael Charles Scott-Joynt, MA, on his resignation on the 31st May.
