River Mersey Body Boyfriend Of Drowned Girl
Police have confirmed that a body found in the River Mersey is the boyfriend of a girl found drowned two weeks ago. Robbie Crofts, 21, had not been seen since 28 August. The body of his girlfriend Hayley Holmes, 17, was found on New Brighton beach the next day. The body was discovered in the water at Birkenhead at 10:00 BST on Sunday, and was confirmed as Mr Crofts. A post-mortem examination revealed he had died from drowning. An inquest is due to open later this week. Det Ch Insp Dave McCaughrean said: "Our thoughts are with Robbie and Hayley's families at this sad time."
Planning Reforms Are Fair Says FMB
The Government's proposals to reform the planning system are balanced and fair, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) in its response to the House of Commons Communities and Local Government Committee inquiry into the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Brian Berry, Director of External Affairs at the FMB said: "The planning system is in need of urgent reform if it is to deliver the homes and infrastructure that this country needs to support economic growth. The Government's proposal to introduce a ‘presumption in favour of sustainable development’ is not, as many are suggesting, a green light for simple development resulting in the concreting over of the countryside. The NPPF is explicit in protecting green spaces and the importance of Green Belt land."
Welfare Benefits Will Be Monthly Say Ministers
Welfare benefits could be paid monthly to prepare people for the world of work, ministers are claiming on Tuesday. Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said the "all in one" plan for Universal Credit would move away from a system of mainly fortnightly payments. The government revealed the plans in a raft of extra detail about its shake-up of the benefits system.
