NHS Sends Personal Information Disc To Landfill
A disc containing the private information of 1.6 million people has been sent to a landfill site by an NHS trust by mistake, a watchdog has revealed. The Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust put the CD, which contained the name, address, date of birth, NHS number and GP of some 1.6 million people, in a filing cabinet during an office move. The Information Commissioner's Office said no one told staff who sent the cabinet to the landfill site and it has not been recovered.
Injured man dies In Suspected Arson Attack
A man who was injured in a suspected arson attack on a house in Kent that killed his daughter and grandson has died in hospital. Melissa Crook, 20, and her 15-month old son Noah died in the fire at their house in Chatham Hill in the early hours of Saturday. Her father, Mark Crook, 49, had been in a serious condition in hospital. His wife and son were also hurt but have since been released from hospital. Three people charged over the fire have been remanded in custody. Dani Muhammadi, 23, and Emma Smith, 21, both of Coventry, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court earlier alongside Farhad Mahmud, 35, of Maidstone. All three will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on 25 November.
Rogue Trader Could Sink Bank
Thousands of jobs could go at UBS as the Swiss bank is forced to slim its investment banking business after an alleged rogue trader lost €2bn (£1.3bn). Last month the bank announced plans to cut 3,500 jobs to save £1.5bn, in a bid to sure up falling confidence in the bank's trading. However, the rogue trading revelations this week have dashed attempts by the bank to win over jittery investors. Meanwhile, Kweku Adoboli, 31, is still in custody at Bishopsgate police station, while executives from the Swiss bank are continuing to rifle through their books. More information is expected later on Friday as pressure mounts on chief executive Oswald Grübel to explain the latest crisis. British-educated Adoboli, who is of Ghanaian descent, is understood to have hired Kingsley Napley, the firm of lawyers that represented Nick Leeson when his £800m rogue trading caused the collapse of Barings in 1995.
