British Man Dies After Fight In Cannes
There has been a tragedy in France with news that a British man has died after a fight broke out in the Riviera resort of Cannes.
The Foreign Office said next of kin had been informed and consular assistance was being provided after the 37-year-old, named by local police as Lee Elton Fischer from London, was understood to have hit his head on the pavement on Sunday and died instantly.
Three French men, aged between 25 and 30, were in police custody on suspicion of manslaughter and a prosecutor has opened an investigation.
A local police spokesman said Mr Fischer appeared to have been hit several times in the face during the fight. He then fell awkwardly.
The BBC has reported that he was involved in an argument with three other men who work in the local area.
"He died instantly and so he was not taken to hospital. We are as yet unsure what sparked the dispute."
Mr Fischer is understood to have been in Cannes to work at a trade exhibition organised by the Tax Free World Association.
A post mortem examination is due to be carried out.
