UK Economy At 'Dangerous Junction'

The UK economy has stalled at a "dangerous junction", according to financial analysts Ernst and Young. The body, who use the same forecasting methods as the government, says the economy needs new growth measures to get back on track. It says uncertainty across the eurozone and a slowing world economy is undermining business confidence. Ernst and Young also said the Bank of England's use of quantitative easing is unlikely to prompt recovery. Its forecast for gross domestic product (GDP) was downgraded to just 0.9% this year, down half a per cent since three months ago. It says growth should pick up to 1.5% in 2012, although that is also well under the 2.2% it previously predicted.

Three Arrested Over Gunner Murder

Detectives investigating the murder of 32-year old Paul Gunner have arrested three men. The men, aged 31, 32 and 25 were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody at a south London police station. Police said they were continuing an appeal for witnesses after Mr Gunner died following an assault while out celebrating his birthday. A police spokesman said that the victim was standing outside a kebab shop in Bourne Road, Bexley at approx 1am on Sunday 16 October when he was approached by three white males. An altercation occurred resulting in the victim being punched and falling to the ground. The three males then made off on foot in the direction of Gravel Hill. Officers and London Ambulance Service were called and the man was taken to hospital where he died at 2.26am. A post mortem is expected to take place shortly. Police said it is now believed the same three males may have been involved in separate incident where a male was assaulted outside the same venue approximately ten minutes earlier. The male assaulted was not seriously injured and left the scene. Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command leads the investigation. She said: "Paul Gunner lost his life on a night which should have been a celebration for him and his family. I would appeal for anyone who witnessed this assault, or the altercation that occurred shortly before, to contact police. I am particularly keen to speak to the victim of the first assault as he may hold vital details which could help us identify the suspects."

Police Launch Hallowe'en Crackdown

With Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night around the corner, the Metropolitan Police Service said they will commence their seasonal crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour. Officers are carrying out after-school patrols at key locations, such as town centres and transport hubs, to disrupt potential involvement in robbery, violence and other criminal activities which impact on our neighbourhoods. They will also be using screening arches, as well as 'wands', as part of wider detection tactics to deter the carriage of weapons and will take part in test sale operations with Trading Standards regarding the sale of fireworks, alcohol and over-the-counter weapons. Commander Christine Jones, said: "I would like to stress that our operations are not aimed at demonising young people, the large majority of whom behave safely and responsibly. However those intent on committing crime and anti-social behaviour will face the consequences."
