Argentina Says Royal Posting 'Provocative'
Argentina has accused Britain of acting “provocatively” after an announcement that Prince William would be serving in the contested Falkland Islands. It was announced on Friday that the Duke of Cambridge would be deployed to the Falkland Islands early next year for six weeks as a search and rescue helicopter pilot. However, the country, which still claims sovereignty over the islands, claims it is a politically motivated decision to send the 29-year-old William. Director general for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Brugo Marco, said the move was aggressive and “a provocative act”. The prince will be deployed to the South Atlantic for six weeks in February next year and will be posted to RAF Mount Pleasant but will return shortly before the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, on April 2.
Labour Double By-Election Victory
Labour has come out on top in the latest council by-elections, making two gains and defending a marginal seat. The Liberal Democrats also managed to win back a seat from the Tories after losing out in May's main polls. Gaining a seat from the Respect Party at Sparkbrook, Birmingham, was Labour's Victoria Quinn, while Party candidate Gary Poole had a landslide victory at St Mary's, Islington London Borough. Labour also defended an Aldborough seat at Redbridge in the Capital, where the other two ward councillors are Tories. The Green Party saw a small rise in its vote share in the two seats it had fought for, coming ahead of Tories at Birmingham and Islington.
Prison Population Hits Record High
The amount of people behind bars in England and Wales has reached an all-time high of 87,945, according to figures published on Friday. The total is only 1,310 below the usable operational capacity and 196 higher than last week's record of 87,749, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said. The rise in the number of those incarcerated is being partly fuelled by the ongoing police operation into this summer's looting, but the Government has insisted there will be enough prison places for anyone jailed over the riots.
