Willets Releases UK Research Report
The Universities and Science Minister has released a series of reports demonstrating how the UK is a "world leader" in research.
Producing the reports, which show the impact of Research Council funding, David Willetts said the reports detailed how research had created wealth, improved society, increased the number of skilled individuals and promoted health and wellbeing.
"These reports demonstrate that the UK is a world leader in science and research. From the development of groundbreaking new treatments to studies that shape public policy and improve lives, the significant economic and societal impact of the UK research base is extremely impressive," Mr Willets said.
Included in the reports are how Beneforte Broccoli, developed from BBSRC-funded research at the Institute of Food Research and the John Innes Centre boosts the body’s antioxidant enzyme levels.
Another of the reports is be the NERC Sea Mammal Research Unit which demonstrated that Sea turbines can be deployed without harm to sea mammals, allowing 500-1000 tidal turbines to be deployed in UK waters by 2020, potentially generating £150m to £1bn per annum for the UK economy by 2050.

Calls To Lower Drink-Drive Limit In England
The Police Federation has said the drink-drive limit in England and Wales should be lowered. The organisation, which represents rank and file officers in England and Wales, wants the limit cut from 80 to 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Breastfeeding Incentive Pilot Scheme Launched
Shopping vouchers worth up to £200 are to be offered to new mothers as an incentive to breastfeed. A pilot scheme, funded in collaboration by the government and the medical research sector, will be launched in "deprived areas" of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

Almost Half Of Cancers 'Due To Lifestyle'
A major cancer research group has announced on Wednesday that changing our lifestyle can prevent 40% of all cancers. Cancer Research UK said that more than 100,000 cancers – equivalent to one third of all those diagnosed in the UK each year – were being caused by smoking, unhealthy diets, alcohol and excess weight, alone.
